Setup and use PGP keys to send and receive end-to-end encrypted emails
Follow this easy step-by-step guide to begin sending and receiving encrypted emails
This document will guide you through the process of setting up your Typewire account to send and receive end-to-end encrypted emails using PGP keys.
Within minutes your be enjoying the highest level of security available with fully encrypted emails.
Step 1: Create your PGP keypair.
PGP keypairs contain both a secret (private) key and a public key. You will share your public key with senders from whom you wish to receive encrypted emails. Your secret key must never be shared and will be used to decrypt emails from senders who encrypt using your public key.
- Login to your Typewire account.
- Go to 'Settings', 'Mail settings', 'PGP keys'.
- Press the 'New' icon.
- Enter a name for your new keypair.
- Select all the identities that will be included in the new keypair.
- Enter a passphrase for your new keypair. This passphrase will be required to decrypt any emails encrypted using this keypair's public key.
- Press 'Save'.
- Typewire will build your new keypair and add it to your Typewire keychain.
Step 2: Share your public key with senders.
Senders will use your public key to send you end-to-end encrypted emails. You must share your public key with any sender from whom you wish to receive encrypted emails.
- Compose an email any number of recipients with whom you wish to share your public key.
- Before sending enable the 'Attach my public key' option in the email composer.
- Press 'Send'.
- Typewire will attach your public key to the composed email and send to your recipients.
- Your recipients can save your public key to their keychain from the attachment in your email.
- Those who have your public key saved in their keychain can now send end-to-end encrypted emails to you.
Step 3: Request public keys from others.
To send end-to-end encrypted emails to your recipients you must request their public key. The simplest way to receive a public key is as an email attachment. Typewire will detect and import public keys attached to emails with a single click.
- When you receive an email containing a public key attachment, press on the attachment.
- Press 'Import PGP keys' in the menu that appears.
- Typewire will process and import the public key to your keychain.
- You can now send end-to-end encrypted emails to the recipients listed in this public key.
Step 4: Send end-to-end encrypted emails.
To send end-to-end encrypted emails you must have matching public keys for all the recipient email addresses in your composed email. If Typewire cannot find matching public keys for all recipients a warning will appear.
- Compose your email as normal to your recipients with all attachments etc.
- Before sending enable the 'Encrypt this email' option in the email composer.
- Press 'Send'.
- Typewire will encrypt your email and deliver to your recipients.
Step 5: Read and end-to-end encrypted email.
When you receive and end-to-end encrypted email you must have access to the secret key matching the public key used the encrypt the email. You must also have the correct passphrase to unlock the secret key.
- Press 'Decrypt' in the header section of any encrypted email.
- Typewire will search your keychain for the matching secret key.
- If the correct secret key is found Typewire will ask for the passphrase to unlock the key.
- If the passphrase is correct the email will be decrypted and readable.
